Make Room for Growth
Growth doesn't happen in a life that's completely full. I've watched this play out both professionally and personally — in the families I assess, and in the support group I walk alongside, for people navigating illness, whether it's their own diagnosis or someone they love. The people who make it through a hard season well, not just survive it and come out depleted, are almost always the ones who found room somewhere along the way. Not because the season itself got any easier. Because they stopped trying to carry every single piece of it alone.
If you're the one managing appointments, medications, meals, and everyone's worry — including your own — on top of your own job and your own family, there may genuinely be no space left inside you to grow into anything. I want to be plain about this: that's not a personal failing. That's simply what happens when one person tries to hold a role that was never meant to be held by one person alone.
What making room actually looks like
Making room doesn't mean stepping back from caring about your parent, or loving them any less. It means building enough real support around the caregiving itself that you can show up steady, instead of stretched thin and running on fumes you don't have.
Sometimes it's a few hours of respite care each week. Sometimes it's handing off the parts that drain you most, so you have something left over for the parts of the relationship that actually matter to you. Sometimes it's simply having one other person who understands what you're carrying, so it stops being invisible.
In my experience, both from assessments and from years alongside people in my support group, the families who sustain caregiving well over years — not just through one difficult season — are almost always the ones who made room for support before they hit a breaking point, not after.
Where to start making room
If you're wondering where to start, a Family Care Planning session helps map out where support would genuinely make the biggest difference for your specific situation. And if you're building your own footing first, the Caregiver Starter Guide is a steady place to begin.
